Modeling Tips Part 3 (Modeling is Hard Work)

If you want to be a model because you are pretty and think it will be easy to just stand there and have someone click the shutter on a camera and hand you dollars then you best beware.  Modeling is hard work! The other day we shot for 8 hours and my model was tired. You have to be prepared to pose in some uncomfortable and awkward positions that will test muscles you didn’t even know you had.  Not only will you pose in uncomfortable positions, the surfaces you will pose on like rocks , bricks, sand, trees and rusty equipment will be hostile to those poses.  Sometimes it will be hot and you will be dressed to the hilt.  Sometimes it will be really cold and you will be in a bikini.  You will change outfits a dozen times and walk around in high heels on surfaces meant for hiking boots.

So if you still want to model after all that I suggest keeping in shape!  Not just staying thin by starving yourself, but keep aerobically fit so you have the stamina for an eight hour shoot.  Lift weights to define your musculature and do yoga for balance and flexibility. Study the poses of professional  in major magazines and practice posing in the mirror.  While practicing posing pick an emotion and try to convey it with your body language and facial expression. Work on emotions like happy, energetic, fun, free, whimsical, sexy, seductive, playful, loving, vengeful and all business.

That brings me to another point, it’s not just the shooting time that makes modeling hard work,  it’s the preparation. Staying in shape,  practicing, preparing for a shoot, sitting while having your hair and make-up done and marketing yourself to get the job in the first place all add up to making modeling a lot harder than it looks to the casual observer.
